International Conference "Sava river - A transport corridor and tourist destination"
The Conference, which was opened by the Minister of Transport of the Republic of Serbia, Mr. Milutin Mrkonjić, gathered more than 80 participants – representatives of governmental sector, non-governmental organizations, economic / business and academic sector from the fields of inland navigation, tourism, water management and environmental protection, from all the ISRBC member states (Slovenia, Croatia, B&H and Serbia). In addition to the European Coordinator for Inland Waterways, Ms. Karla Peijs and other representatives of the European Commission, representatives of the ICPDR, Danube Commission, EU Danube Strategy and other international organizations and institutions participated at the Conference, as well.
Results of the regional cooperation in the fields of navigation and tourism under the coordination of the ISRBC, were presented at the Conference. These activities were also considered from the perspective of the European policy on inland waterway transport, as well as from the standpoint of implementation of the EU Danube Strategy. Views and reactions of a wide range of stakeholders were expressed in regard to the achieved results. Updated information on other ongoing initiatives and processes in the region in the fields of navigation and tourism were collected at the Conference, as well.
The necessity was clearly expressed by the participants that the Sava river waterway should be brought again to a navigable state as soon as possible. It was also stressed that the ISRBC, in cooperation with the member states, should make further and extra efforts to overcome all existing difficulties in the implementation of the project of rehabilitation of the Sava river waterway. It has been confirmed that there is a great potential and interest in the region for the development of all aspects of "sustainable" tourism (nautical, recreational, eco-tourism, etc.). In this regard, the ISRBC is perceived as a good framework for further involvement of stakeholders from all Sava countries and all sectors of society, as a mechanism for more effective preparation and implementation of cross-border projects (including fund-raising), and as a platform for coordinating further activities within the basin in the field of "sustainable" tourism.
