Catastrophic Floods in the Sava River Basin

The Sava River Basin was hit by the worst and biggest floods ever recorded in history, in which several people were killed and many were missing. Many towns and villages in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia and Serbia are under the water, while in areas so far spared there is a bitter struggle against further flooding. Large population have been evacuated and all available resources in the countries have been mobilized to provide aid in this difficult situation.

Following the catastrophic floods in the region, the Sava Commission temporarily suspended regular activities envisaged for this year's celebration of the Sava River Day – organizaton of the the Sava River Bicycle Tour 2014 and the Youth Parlaiment 2014, as well as support to the organization of the rowing reggata on the Sava. As to the funds allocated for these activities, the Sava Commission shall donate them as an aid to the victims in all three areas of the Sava countries.

In the course of the successful international cooperation with other river and lake international organizations in Europe, the Sava Commission sent an invitation to 15 partner organizations to provide aid to the population in flooded regions in Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia, through the Red Cross and to specify the account numbers of the Red Cross in three affected countries to which disaster relleif funds can be donated.

Besides, the Sava Commission is appealing to all other partners to provide aid to the residents of flooded areas in Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia through regional organizations of the Red Cross.
